Light: how much they really need, and how to measure it without instruments
The number one cause of plants that slowly decline is not water: it is the wrong light. How to work out how much you actually have, with the hand-shadow test, and what each aspect asks for.
When a plant declines slowly — leaves getting smaller, stems stretching after something, colours fading — nine times out of ten the problem is neither water nor fertiliser. It is light. It is the hardest mistake to see, because the wrong light does not kill in a week: it wears the plant down over months, and by the time you notice you have already changed the substrate and cut back the watering for nothing.
The first thing to understand is that the human eye is a terrible light meter. We adapt so well that a room which looks "bright" to us is half-dark to a plant. Light falls off with the square of the distance: two metres from a window a quarter of it arrives, compared to a plant sitting against the glass. One step back, for a plant, is half the light.
The hand-shadow test, no instruments needed
Put your hand between the plant and the main light source, at midday on an ordinary day. If it casts a sharp shadow with defined edges, you are in bright light. If the shadow is there but soft and blurred, medium light. If you can barely make a shadow out, low light: only the most tolerant understorey species survive there.
What each aspect gives you, in a real home
North window: soft, steady light all day, never direct. It is perfect for rhizomatous Begonias and understorey aroids. East: gentle morning sun, then indirect light — the easiest aspect for most tropicals. West: hot afternoon sun, which scorches thin leaves in summer; fine behind a light curtain. South: the brightest, excellent but often too direct — most of the plants in this catalogue want to sit a metre from the glass, not against it.
"Bright indirect light" — the formula on every care sheet — means something precise: plenty of light, but not the sun aimed straight at the plant. A very bright room where the sun comes in without landing on the leaf. It does not mean shade, and that is the misreading that ruins the most plants: they get put in a corner "so they will not burn" and are quietly sentenced to fade.
Direct sun is something else again, and few of my plants want it: it burns velvet leaves and bleaches variegation. Where a species tolerates it, I say so on the care sheet.
An early, reliable signal: look at the distance between one leaf and the next along the stem. If new leaves come out close together and compact, the light is enough. If the stem stretches and the leaves come out spaced and smaller, the plant is reaching for a light it cannot find. Correct it before it becomes a permanent problem of shape.
If there is no bright enough spot in the house, a full-spectrum LED bar solves everything and costs little: 10-12 hours a day on a timer, twenty to thirty centimetres from the leaves. It is not a last resort for obsessives — for many understorey species in a northern Italian flat it is simply what the plant needs.
