When young it flattens its leaves against the support like roof tiles, with no gap between them: that is the phase people buy it for. As it climbs it changes completely — the leaves lift off the trunk, grow larger and fenestrate. It wants a board or a pole from day one: on the ground it never makes the shingling phase.

  1. Cut a stem with two nodes, keeping the leaves against the board
  2. Fix the cutting against damp sphagnum, without taking it off its support

  4. Roots in 4–8 weeks
