Forty pots, the sphagnum to fill them, the root booster and the pipettes to dose it.

Forty cuttings at once, each in its own pot: roots do not tangle, and the ones that are ready move without disturbing the rest. The Chilean long-fibre sphagnum is what we root in ourselves, and three hundred dry grams yields ten to twelve litres rehydrated, which is comfortably enough to fill the tray.

Root Complex is the third piece, and it is not a fertiliser: it is what you give when roots still have to form. It is dosed at 5 ml per litre in the rooting water, and it is the one point in the process where a wrong dose takes the whole batch with it — which is why there are two pipettes and not none.

How it goes together

1. Rehydrate the sphagnum: ten minutes in warm water, then wring it out until it stops dripping. It has to be damp, not soaked — that is the mistake that drowns cuttings before they even start.
2. Fill the forty pots without pressing, one cutting per pot. 300 g dry yields 10–12 litres: you will use part of it, and the rest reseals and waits for the next batch.
3. Water with Root Complex at 5 ml per litre. This is the one point where a wrong dose takes the whole batch with it, and that is exactly what the pipettes are for.
4. Dome on and vents closed for the first ten days: humidity above 80% is the condition in which a cutting roots in three weeks instead of eight.
5. Then open the vents a little at a time over two weeks. It is the step everyone skips, and it is what decides whether the cuttings can take indoor air.
6. The two trays of twenty pull out separately: the cuttings that are ready move without disturbing the ones behind.

What else you need

• The cuttings. And if the room is below 20 degrees, bottom heat: below that temperature rooting slows right down, and it is not a problem humidity fixes. We do not sell a heat mat.
